GIS Data on GROMIT

For users with an MVZ intranet account, login and access the GIS directory via: \\gromit.mvz.berkeley.edu\GISDataPortal\

If you have ArcGIS 9.* installed, then use ArcCatalog to browse, preview data, and copy to your local harddrive. First time users will have to make a new Folder Connection (File>Connect Folder or the shortcut button), then copy the path above into the browse window. The network path will show as a drive option in the directory tree panel.

Both spatial data for research projects and general use layers are archived here. Check metadata and readme files in directories to understand what you are getting. Please copy to your local computer to use.

General Landcover/Boundary Datasets:

California GIS Data Downloads from CA Dept of Forestry and Fire Protection: Statewide coverage for Fire Threats, Fuel Loads, Land Cover, Bioregions, Historic 1977 CalVeg, Land Cover Change (LCMMP), and more.

Global Dataset for Administrative Boundaries or GADM v. 1.0, Global Administrative Areas, for downloading.

For high-resolution Elevation Data (DEM, NED, SRTM) and other landcover layers, use USGS Seamless Server. Coverage includes both US and the world; server has both graphical map or coordinate defined downloads.

GAP Analysis (and other species ranges):

California GAP Analysis project (UCSB): Download Statewide datasets, including predicted distributions for 455 terrestrial vertebrate species here.

USGS-NBII has a central site to find other states’ GAP Projects (GAP Resources by State).
